I did not like the bright plastic igloos sold at the pet store for hamsters, so I placed a request on Alchemy for a ceramic hideout for my hamsters. Etsy artist Black Dachshund Potter responded and made this gorgeous piece for my little ones! I love how it turned out, so do the hamsters, but they don't know they are the owners of a piece of art!

It has been quite awhile since I last wrote an "Etsy Item of the Day" feature, but today I began spring cleaning, so I thought I would dust off the old feature list (well, not literally - it's on the computer) and write a feature.

It is easy to get so drawn in by all the wonderful handmade items on Etsy that one forgets that Etsy also contains vintage finds and supplies. Thus, today's featured item is a beautiful vintage circle brooch listed in the Loft at GalleriaLinda!

This elegant piece reminds me of my grandmother's jewelry and appears to date to the 1960s. It features golden leaves and two "flowers" of faux pearl and green stone. The diameter measures 1.5 inches [3.8 cm].

The CPSIA and Books

Few children's items are safe from the CPSIA, and books are not among them. "Ordinary" children's books printed since 1985 are exempt from the testing requirements. Yes, 1985. Thus, many of the books we loved as children are effectively deemed hazardous, unless someone has the time and money to test each title and edition. Furthermore, any "unusual" books, such as those containing staples, are not exempt, regardless of printing date. If the law is kept as is and is enforced, it will have profound effects on libraries and bookstores. Some of us on Etsy have begun posting pictures of endangered books in a Flickr group, and I will post some here as well. Here is a useful article on the subject. Take some time today to share a vintage book with a child!

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act

In order to improve the safety of children's items, the US government has put into place a series of regulations regarding items intended for children under the age of 12. Unfortunately, these regulations are having devastating repercussions for children, parents, sellers of used items, certain crafters, and others. Many items will eventually be required to undergo expensive testing for lead and phthalates in order to be sold, as noted in Etsy's recent Storque article. Thankfully, yarn is exempt from the testing, so Dragon in Knots will only be affected in that children's items will not contain any buttons or other findings until some sort of solution is found. However, I believe the new regulations will have an effect on all of us sooner or later, so I urge everyone to learn more about the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. I will be posting more on this later.

~ I have a confession to make. My favorite of all the scarves I own was not made by me. In fact, it is older than me and dates from my dad's college days. It is made from a very itchy wool and has a few holes and stains. Like a distorted predecessor of the first Harry Potter scarf (you know, the one with wide burgundy and mustard stripes), it is made of blocks of mustard, ranch red, and, yes, plum! It is positively horrid, and I want to make a replica of it one day, though perhaps in a less itchy version.
~ I own a sword. It was a gift from one of my closest friends. It currently lives on the top of a book shelf, surrounded by girly knick-knacks.
~ I hate off-white walls. I painted the walls in my room a beautiful shade of light green when I was living with my parents some years ago. Now I am going to graduate school and have to live in an apartment. Guess what color nearly all apartments are...
~ I am somewhat germaphobic. I tend to be slightly more normal when traveling, but once, on a class trip, my roommate started counting how many times I washed my hands. She got to six before breakfast.
~ I have lived in three cities (two countries, two US states) since July.
~ I love fairy tales (the traditional versions, not the cleaned-up Disney ones). I have read all the Grimm fairy tales and am starting to branch out from there.
~ I am a firm believer that we should reinstate the dual pronouns "wit" and "git" back into the English language.

Weaving in the Loose Ends

Today I took a little time off from schoolwork to get some shop improvements rolling. Some weeks ago, I began collecting and typing out the notes I have made for the crocheted items I have designed, so that I can have them all in one place and fill out the details more, so that I will not have to guess what I was thinking when I first wrote out these "patterns." I typed up a couple more today, but I still have quite a few more to go. I think it is better if I type a few at a time, so that I do not get overwhelmed. I recently wrote up a new pattern and crocheted the first item from it. Unfortunately, I cannot list it because I am having trouble getting good pictures of it, so I will have to try again another day. Speaking of pictures, I finally went through my entire shop and made a prioritized list of pictures that need to be redone. It is a far cry from actually retaking said photos, but it is a start.

As far as new items, some of you may have noticed that I have gone a bit berserk with the wrist cuffs lately. I recently ordered more of the yarn I use for these, so I have been trying out new color combinations. However, I am trying not to neglect the winter items as it is already October, so I have a scarf and a hat in the making as well. I hope to get them finished soon!

Well, I cannot believe it. It is October again already. Time for midterms and beginning term papers! It is still pretty warm here, but I need to get working on scarves ASAP. Quest for the Perfect Hamster Cage - Part II

If anyone knows of great places (hamster-friendly, not too expensive, but nice) to live that are close to the UT-Knoxville campus, feel free to drop me a note! I will be on the lookout.

Bordeaux - The Return

I have been back for awhile, as you may have noticed, but with the trip to Bordeaux, the move to Tennessee, and the beginning of classes, unfortunately, this blog was neglected, as always happens when life gets busy. Thus, I will try to take advantage of the few spare minutes I have now to write something interesting.

I could not possibly describe everything I did in Bordeaux because, knowing myself, I would fill pages and pages. I was enrolled in a French as a foreign language program and spent my free time exploring the city and a few of the surrounding towns. So, here are a couple remarks, in case any of you are planning on or thinking about visiting Bordeaux.

Best Deals: Several museums in Bordeaux are free to visitors, though they may charge for visits to their temporary collections. Be sure to visit the Museum of the Aquitaine if you want to learn more about the history of that region.
Also, most tourist sites have discounts for students, so you may want to consider getting an international student card before leaving.

New Attraction: The Wine Trade Museum is a fairly new addition to the sites to visit in Bordeaux. Though small, it is interesting to learn about this important part of the city's history. And there is a wine tasting at the end of the visit!

Don't Miss: Saint-Emilion is a charming, though touristy town that is renowned for its wine and macaroons. Take the bus from Bordeaux in the morning, head straight to the Office of Tourism, and buy a ticket for the underground monuments (St. E's hermitage, Trinity Chapel, the catacombs, and the monolithic church). Be sure to climb up the clock tower (ticket and key available in the Office of Tourism) and the Donjon du Roy (ticket available at base) for spectacular views of the town and surrounding area. After a little lunch, use the map from the Office of Tourism to find the other interesting sites around town and end your day with a little gelato and some window shopping!

WWI and WWII Sites: The old German submarine base in northern Bordeaux is a haunting reminder of a not-so-distant past. A section of the base is currently used for art exhibits (when I went there, it was an eerily gorgeous collection of black-and-white photography, etchings, and sculpture), so pick up a brochure at Bordeaux's Office of Tourism to find out what is being featured.
Although most of the older churches have some sort of memorial to soldiers who died in WWI and/or WWII, there is a particularly large memorial, consisting of walls carved with the names of the deceased, beside Saint-Bruno church (west of the city center).

My shop will be closed from July 4th to August 6th because I will be in Bordeaux for a class that will help prepare me for graduate school. Then, I will be moving to Tennessee in mid-August. I have not yet decided how I will handle the time in-between, but I feel I should warn everyone: certain items, if they do not sell before I move, will not be available when I open my shop back up from Tennessee. My Life in Boxes

I returned from a short trip to Knoxville about a week ago. I will be going to graduate school there in the fall, so I wanted to check it out and familiarize myself with the area. It is definitely different than New Mexico. The campus has lots of tall brick buildings, and the air is thick from moisture and the lower elevation, almost hard to breathe after getting used to living so high up; the hills do not help either. I never thought I would say this, but I will miss my old university, most importantly the people who have taught me so much. Part of me knows it is time to move on, and part of me wonders what I have gotten myself into. I suppose I will just have to adapt. I was hoping to share a couple pictures, but I have not developed them yet (yeah, I know, old-fashioned). I still need to find a place to live (feel free to recommend apartment complexes). I could live in the university apartments, but I am hoping for a place closer to the university and more pet-friendly. I am still waiting for responses on a grant and a job, so I am hoping everything will turn out for the best. On the bright side, one of my good friends is in Ohio now, so maybe I will be able to visit her during spring break or some other time.

I am taking advantage of the time I have before I leave for Bordeaux to pack up what I plan to bring to Knoxville, as well as what I plan to leave, since I will not have a lot of time when I get back. I cannot bring much because of the high gas prices and all that, so much of it is staying in Albuquerque for the time being. Packing the stuff that will stay is like putting together time capsules, since I do not know when I will be able to open these boxes again. I think perhaps the hardest part of packing is choosing between my books. I could not possibly bring all of them, yet I hate to leave 'old friends' behind.

Lunch Sacks and Dishcloths

As you know, if you read my earlier post, I will be moving soon. While getting ready to move, I realized that there are many basics that I do not have and, unfortunately, I also do not have a whole lot of money to buy them. I do, however, have a decent amount of crafting supplies, so I decided to start making what I can. I found some lovely lightweight floral corduroy from last Christmas, which I turned into a skirt for fall. The family yarn collection is fairly abundant, so my mother and I each found a ball of cotton thread and began working on dishcloths. I have heard crocheted dishcloths last for a long time, so they will be a useful basic to have around the apartment. After we each made two, my sister found a bunch that she had made some time ago but had never used. There are so many that I might end up sending some to a friend who also is moving.

My most ambitious project this month was to create an item I have wanted for a long time: a machine-washable, reusable, eco-friendly lunch sack! Remember the Japanese Village fabric I got awhile ago? Well, it was too small for my usual sewing projects, but it was just perfect for two lunch sacks! Yes, two! I am so excited! I finally have proper lunch containers. My mother had to help me create a pattern, but they turned out well. I even had a chance to perfect my button-hole-making skills. Well, I Graduated...

I did it. I finished college. Everyone keeps on saying "Congratulations!" and "Good Job!", but to be honest, I do not really see why I should be congratulated. I did what was expected. I got the predicted GPA, nothing more, nothing less. It does not seem to be an achievement. I thought I would be relieved once all the exams and projects were finished. But on the contrary, I find it is easier to bury oneself in a mathematical proof or the development of socialism in France or the exact meaning of a word in "Beowulf" than to face the real world, to deal with things that were more or less neglected during the semester.

Quest for the Perfect Hamster Cage - Part I

I decided I want to get another dwarf hamster, so I have set out to look for a decent cage. Unfortunately, most hamster cages are too small, difficult or tedious to clean, poorly ventilated, unsafe for dwarfs, too heavy, marketed to children, not escape-proof, or some combination thereof, so this is proving to be a bit of a quest. I am planning on moving this summer, so I do not want to get any hamsters beforehand, but that does not stop me from looking for the best dwarf hamster cage ever!

So, here are a few that piqued my interest, in case anyone else is having the same problem. I wrote out some thoughts on these cages, but keep in mind that this is just based on internet research. Let me know if you have found any better ones or have other remarks to make!

Marchioro Jack 72 Hamster Resort

Pros: This is one of the largest cages available that could work for a dwarf hamster. Given the size, the price is reasonable. It is available in the United States, though I may have to order it online. It is large enough for all the accessories one could want. As far as I can tell, it looks pretty safe.

Cons: As far as I can tell, it only comes in yellow. Does this look like it will even remotely match my decor? I might go as far as to call it ugly, and I do not mean that in a good way. A separate smaller cage would be necessary to keep on hand for transportation. The size may make it difficult to clean.

Questions: Are the tubes removable for cleaning? Does anyone have more detailed pictures, so that I can see the inside better?

Hagen Habitrail Ovo Series

Pros: The cage is cute and attempts to imitate the natural burrowing system of hamsters. Furthermore, it is expandable. A clear distinction can be made between sleeping area, potty, etc. This may be a good addition to a larger cage. It is compatible with other Habitrails. The pad can be separated from the rest of the setup and used for transport.

Cons: Too small for any creature bigger than a dwarf hamster, and even then, one would need to buy many pieces to have enough space for the hamster, which could get expensive and tedious to clean quickly. Since dwarf hamsters are likely to have trouble with vertical tubes, one would need a fair amount of table space. The wheel has a dangerously wide slot. It will have to be replaced. This cage, though cute, still does not match my decor.

Questions: Will Hagen make other products in this series to improve it? Is there a way I can replace the wheel with a better one? How durable is the cage? Is the pad ventilated enough? Are the doors secure?

Savic Hamster Heaven Metro

Pros: Another one of the largest cages available that could work for a dwarf hamster. It has plastic ramps and shelves rather than ones with metal bars, so no hammie feet falling through! As far as I can tell, it looks pretty safe, but the picture is hard to see.

Cons: The designer failed the color-coordination section in art class. The only supplier I have found so far offers the cage for more than $150! A separate cage would be necessary to keep on hand for transportation. The size may make it difficult to clean.

Questions: Are the tubes removable for cleaning? Does anyone have more detailed pictures, so that I can see the inside better?

A Day in the Life

There are those days when one feels so busy and yet accomplishes very little. Today was one of those days for me. I stayed up too late last night to wake up early this morning, and my classes run late on Mondays. Anyways, I thought I would list what I did today in the hopes it would make me feel like I did not waste a day. Besides, if I do not start pushing myself to blog, I am afraid this poor blog would die away:

Woke up. Decided to rest 5 minutes more. Woke up an hour later. Hurried to get ready for school. Ate a quick breakfast. Walked about 20 minutes to the bus stop. Spent about 30 minutes reading the material for my first class. Spent the other 20 or so minutes on the bus working on my Beowulf translation. Walked about 7 minutes to class. Arrived a little early. Sat down on bench and continued translating. Was startled by linguistics teacher and tried to explain why I looked tired. Went to first class. Had an interesting discussion regarding metaphors in languages. Got out of class. Translated some more. And a little more. Laughed at Wealhtheow's speech: "The retainers flushed with drink do as I bid." Finished translating a total of 80 lines for the day. Went to Beowulf class. Teacher brought pizza to accompany the post-Grendel victory banquet scene. Wished we had wine like the Danes and Geats at the feast. It was an interesting class though. Went home. Checked Etsy and left feedback for orders. Hung out in forums for a little while even though I knew better. Did math homework. Replied to an email from a friend at another university. Checked school email address and read teachers' emails. Researched flights for summer trip. Nearly cried at the prices and the euro-to-dollar exchange rate. Ate cookies, a banana, and tea to make me feel better. Worked on linguistics homework. Checked business email address. Posted in blog. Added picture of my university. Put away clean laundry. Went to bed.

Remember back when we had to do school fundraising selling those entertainment books full of coupons? I sure do. Well, I recently started a blog based on this idea, but much cooler, because: one, it does not cost $35, or anything in fact; two, it is online, so it will be updated with new coupons; and three, the coupons are good for items on Etsy! The blog is called Etsy Secrets, and it is a place devoted to coupons valid at Etsy shops!

Basically, how it will work is:
- Sellers who want to post coupons on the blog will contact me, so that I can send them an invitation to become a contributor.
- Then, they can post their coupons on the blog.
- Lastly, customers can browse the blog for great deals on Etsy items!

Since I have interviewed several other Etsians, I thought it would be fun to let some of them interview me! Yesterday, I started a thread on Etsy looking for questions. So here are the questions, those who asked them, and my responses. Enjoy!

Yoboseiyo: Can a dragon *really* be in knots?
Perhaps not the European-style dinosauresque ones, but a long slender Asian-style dragon could get itself into a bit of a knotty predicament!

Bijoutery: How did you find Etsy and why did you decide to open shop here?
At the time, I was selling online on another site. While networking with other crafters, I heard about Etsy and eventually took a look at it. The listing fee was only $0.10 back then, so I decided I would spend $1.00 and then see what would happen. My shop started getting views and hearts, and well, you can figure out the rest.

GriffinGear: Why do we wear one shirt but a pair of pants? Two arms go in the shirt, 2 legs go in the pants?
That is an interesting question. I have not yet seen that construction in another language. The ones I know just use the singular. The word "pants" is probably a borrowing from the French word "pantalon," judging from the similarity and the history. This word was likely borrowed during the Middle English period, but I honestly cannot say whether the construction predates or postdates the borrowing. I have not seen this construction with regards to "pants" in Old English, but quite frankly, I do not think I have ever read anything in Old English on the subject of pairs of pants.

StartsandFits: What has owning your own handmade business taught you and how has it affected your life?
Pre-Etsy Dragon in Knots was started when I was about 18, so I definitely had a lot to learn about being in the real world and about life in general, and having a shop has taught me quite a bit. It has helped me to plan a little better and to improve my people skills. And I think I am starting to gain some patience and confidence. Also, it is very reassuring to be a part of something: a community of artists and crafters, and also simply a part of my own handmade business, which is a small accomplishment in itself.

Charming Darling: How many black t-shirts do you have?
Maybe a dozen total; I have a lot of babydoll-style black t-shirts, probably more than any another type of shirt. They are a good staple for the college girl. They do not stain, and wrinkles are not an issue. They can go with many colors of pants or skirts. They are casual, while still having a clean-cut look that the loose-fitting t-shirts tend to lack. And they are chic and cute!

Canadian Woodcrafts: What do you think makes handmade items so much more appealing to so many people as opposed to mass produced items that are less expensive?
I think people have different reasons to be attracted to handmade items. Some are artists and crafters themselves, so they want to support others like them. Other people support the idea of small businesses and/or simply want to "stick it to the man," a.k.a. large corporations. Still others want to purchase items that are unique or special somehow or just cannot find exactly what they want in big stores. And some are just sick of the poor quality and bad customer service that is common in large chain stores and are excited to see a new generation, a modern version, if you will, of the old-fashioned "Mom-and-Pop" stores.

Lundberg: What type of crocheting injuries have you sustained and how many pints of blood have you lost from them?
Not a whole lot actually. Crocheting tends to be pretty safe. I have however cut myself on papers and on the tape dispenser while packaging items. I have not lost too much blood from it yet!

Coconutty: Why is a nickel larger than a dime? A dime is worth twice as much, so what's the deal?
Sometimes good things come in small packages! Like dwarf hamsters, diamond earrings, and dark chocolate truffles...

L'Histoire

The question for our second poll was "Which time period in European history do you find the most interesting to study?" Voters were allowed one vote each, and the results were:

- 1 vote for each of 1800 to 1900, 1600 to 1700, and before the Roman Empire

- 2 votes each for 1900 to present and 1700 to 1800

- 3 votes each for the Renaissance and the time of the Roman Empire

- And the winner is.... the Middle Ages at a whopping 4 votes!

Thank you to everyone who voted! And in case you are wondering what the point of this seemingly irrelevant poll was, I wanted to know if the speculations that we are living in a period of increased interest in the Middle Ages were correct. Granted this tiny poll proves nothing, but the results are certainly interesting!

You may have also noticed that the poll has been replaced with a picture of a small furry animal. This is a customized module from Pet Finder that shows pets available for adoption. The type, age, and location of the animals can be chosen. Cool, huh? Go here to create one for your blog or website!

I have started making more wrist cuffs to prepare for the spring and summer and to help raise money for my trip. None of the new ones are listed yet, but they should start to appear over the next few weeks.

I am happy to announce that Dragon in Knots is inching its way towards 500 hearts! I would also like to welcome Margins and Smile 4 Katie, two new sellers on Etsy!

I have been browsing a lot of blogs by other Etsians to get some ideas about what to talk about here. One of the blogs I read (sorry, I cannot remember which one) mentioned Pet Finder, which includes a searchable database to help people find pets to adopt. It is awesome to see that someone has taken advantage of modern tools to help people find the perfect pet and to help pets find a loving home. One of the groups that posts profiles of adoptable pets on Pet Finder is Life Long Tails, which I find particularly cool because this New York based organization rescues and finds homes for small animals. The general push for pet adoption tends to focus on dogs and cats, so it is wonderful to know that someone is looking out for the little creatures as well. Life Long Tails cares for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, chinchillas, ferrets, sugar gliders, degus, birds, reptiles, hermit crabs, amphibians, and more! And for those of you who love blogs, they have one as well for events, newcomers, adoptions, and other little tidbits of information.

Bordeaux

If all goes according to plans, I will be spending July and the beginning of August in Bordeaux as part of a language program to strengthen my French skills to help in my future studies. I know it is a little early to be announcing this, but I feel that I should for several reasons.

First of all, unfortunately, Dragon in Knots will most likely be closed during this period, as my inventory is far too large to bring with me, and I do not currently have any volunteers to take over operations temporarily. So if there is anything you are eyeing in my shop, here is your advanced notice to purchase it before I leave. Otherwise, you will have to wait until I return. I will be putting some items on sale in the months before I leave to help raise some money for my trip, so if you are interested in a good deal, be sure to browse periodically.

Secondly, any happy thoughts and prayers sent my way, both during the planning process and the actual trip, would be much appreciated! There are still some logistics and details to be worked out and as always, financing the venture is a major issue. Please pray that everything goes smoothly!

Thirdly, I want you to know a little more about the person behind Dragon in Knots, since the personal touch is what makes handmade crafts extra special. I am unsure about what sort of internet access I will have in France, but I am hoping to be able to update this blog while I am away, to keep Dragon in Knots alive while my shop is down and to let you know about some of my adventures. If this is not possible, then I will tell you about the trip when I return.

I do not really have exact dates and such, as of right now, but I will post more information later.

Random travel tip: Before traveling to another country, find out your shoe and clothing sizes in their sizing system. Even if you do not plan to do any shoe or clothing shopping abroad, you never know if you will find an outfit you "have to have" or if your walking shoes will wear out. A few minutes of research now could save you quite a bit of frustration later.

A Blog, a Ring, and a Rope

I went to the graduation "fair" at school today. It is really just a collection of tables with people selling paraphernalia for graduation. For some reason, the people in the bookstore would not just let me buy the few things I needed before said fair. So, I got my tassel and my cord (Am I the only one who finds some black humor in the university encouraging over-achievers to wear a rope around their neck?). I did get some amusement by calculating just how much someone could spend on graduation. The "official" graduation announcements are quite boring and would cost a fortune (unless, of course, you have a short mailing list.) And the rings start at about $230. That is for a plain model with engraving around it, made from a material of which I have never heard. I already have a ring like that. It says, "One ring to rule them all..." So, my solution was a trip to Hobby Lobby and some browsing around Etsy. My sister and I put our creativity together, and now I have some of the coolest graduation announcements ever, at a fraction of the cost. I also found some really beautiful and unique rings on Etsy.

Valentine's for Singles - Part I

Valentine's Day is often reserved for children and those who are in romantic relationships. So instead of putting together a traditional Valentine's Day Gift Guide, I decided this year to focus on those of us who are usually ignored this time of year, that is, the singles. Whether you spend Valentine's Day with friends, rejoicing at having escaped yet another year still single, alone crying over a box of chocolates, staking out potential sweethearts, chasing away wannabe worshippers, or oblivious to the fact that the holiday even exists, this series of posts is for you!

A constant friend who serves as a companion, a morale-booster, a confidant, an advisor, and even, at times, a critic is one of the greatest treasures in life.

Our second featured item is a tribute to the time-honored tradition of going out drinking with friends! "Double Trouble," an adorably odd t-shirt by Tsai-fi, features two unusual drinking buddies who have had one drink too many and have begun to spew out cosmos! Many of us have at least one friend who knows too much about us: that friend who has been there to comfort us and sometimes laugh at us when we are having issues with the opposite sex, that friend who finishes our sentences and shares our peculiar sense of humor. ACEO Galore!

ACEO's are a fun, addicting, and comparatively inexpensive way to collect art, and there are tons of beautiful and adorable ones up for sale on Etsy. I already have ones from Tanya Bond, Whimsies Folksies, and Laurali, plus one on its way from Decadence Designs. But before I get ahead of myself, here is a quick lesson for those of you who are not quite up-to-date on acronyms:

ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. They are essentially baseball cards for art collectors. They can be made in any medium, but they must measure 2.5" by 3.5" and be either original or limited edition reproductions. ATC's, or Artist Trading Cards, are the same as ACEO's, except they can only be traded, not sold.

"Orange Fantasy Flower" is an original mini painting, with outlines and accents done in ink. The artist, Sharon Foster, is a member of the Etsy for Animals street team. The proceeds from the sale of this ACEO will go to Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary.

"Radiant Color" is a OOAK (that is, one of a kind, for our non-acronym-savvy readers) ACEO by Elena Mary. It is made up of six tiny fabric collages and features beads, sequins, and other items.

"Watercolor Abstract Flower" by Bella Cosa Art is an original painting, produced using a technique called negative painting, as well as salt to create a textured appearance.

My Origami Waterbird Mobile was on the front page of Etsy today as part of a Treasury put together by the Vintage Zoo! One of the other items featured was a unique Alice in Wonderland Belt Buckle, made by Maxine Dear from an old children's book!

Etsy seller Octavine Illustration just started a blog! Her shop is named after her great-aunt and specializes in cards, clothing, and other items featuring Art Deco inspired images.

Back from the Dead!

Okay, well not quite, but I have been somewhat MIA (missing in action) with regards to this blog the past few months. Life got in the way. It tends to do that. But... I have some exciting news! I just received my copy of the new illustrated edition of Beowulf in the mail!!! I miss the dual-language format, but the pictures are wonderful (and I already have a copy of the Old English anyway)! Um... so now that everyone knows I am nerd, on to Dragon in Knots business!

Although I have been taking a break from blogging, I have still been crocheting away! I have created and listed so many items since my last blog post that it would be excessive to list them all here, but I will introduce a couple. I recently listed my first Splat Scarflette, which combines my popular loop-style scarflette with the splatted egg motif. I am hoping to gradually expand my selection of egg items. I also very recently completed a set of Grapefruit Slice Coasters, which has been on my to-do list since I introduced the first coasters in my citrus series.

And my last order of business tonight is to introduce a fellow Etsy seller and university student Arcablue! Currently, she has some adorable needle-felted dogs up for adoption in her Etsy store, and better yet, she also does custom work, so you can have a needle-felted portrait of your furry friend! She will be making more critters, so be sure to check her shop again later!

Poofy Sheep: My name is Mila, and I own Poofy Sheep Studios. I started my business at the beginning of this summer. I make mainly beaded and chain jewelry, but I also sometimes have decorated notebooks and boxes in my shop. My designs are very eclectic: some funky modern pieces, but also some glass vial jewelry. I am a student at Northwestern University.

Jelly Beans: Hi, I've just recently became a member of EtsyU. I'm Angie, and I run the shop Jellybeans on Etsy. I'm currently a student at the University of Western Ontario, and I've been painting on the side since I was a little girl. Etsy Interview - Very Vintage

Our next interviewee is Very Vintage, whose shop currently offers shabby chic and vintage-inspired boxes, jars, and hair accessories!

Tell me about your art.
My art is inspired from my trips to flea markets and my love of antiques. I think I put a shabby vintage spin on most of my products as well as put lots of love into everything I make.

When and why did you begin selling?
I just recently began selling my items in July of this year. I began to learn from a co-worker of mine, more about art and the various techniques to it, and I fell in love with it. I was so undecided with what to do with my life (I am still in college) and now I am so happy that I found something that I love!

Looking back to when you began selling or crafting, do you have any regrets?
I haven't been selling for very long but I think I am a very shy person so I am trying to really push myself to get out there and meet people and promote my business!

Pick one item from your shop, and tell me about it.
This is my favorite jar. I started creating these jars from vintage jars that I had collected at flea markets. I hand stain them with ink to create a array of different colors on the glass, then I added some adorable lace and ribbon to the sides. I also adorned the top with a beautiful vintage rose paper. I love this jar and it personifies me perfectly!

What are your long term goals, for your business or personal life?
My long term goals are that I would love to keep creating my items and gain a bigger audience. I would like my etsy shop to grow but I also hope to be selling in boutiques and things like that. I also would eventually like to branch out into designing my own fabric because I am really fabric fanatic!

If you could personally thank anyone, living or dead, who would you thank?
I would thank my mother for always believing in me and understanding and being supportive of everything that I want to do. She really is my best friend. I can confide in her and tell her anything and she won't judge me or put me down but instead try to help me.

If you were granted two wishes, one realistic and one unrealistic, what would they be?
I would first wish that I could have the ability to be invisible. hahaha. I always want to be invisible so I can listen to what others are saying about me (or my products) in this case. The other wish I have is for my products to be sold in a larger scope then they currently are. I know that if I keep working at this I can achieve it. I am going to be selling at the Homemade for the Holidays show at Fairfax High School, so hopefully that will be the stepping stone to some more successes.

Is there anything you would like to ask me?
I really like your work, and so I would really like to know what inspires you?

I tend to look at the world as a chaotic system. According to mathematics, one of the properties of chaos is sensitive dependence on initial conditions. So in this light, everything I am exposed to influences me, regardless of whether or not I am aware of it. As you can see even from this explanation, I tend to let my experiences, passions, philosophies, and pastimes all blend together.

I had every intention of posting an Etsy Item of the Day today, but on further consideration, I think it would be better to wait until I am perkier and can give the featured seller all the attention and praise they deserve. I am rather disappointed today. The last roll of film I took in France was still in my camera for the rest of the summer because I had not taken all 36 photographs and did not want to waste film. So, I finally used up the rest of the film, taking pictures of the prettier parts of campus, and took the film to be developed. It was supposed to be finished today, and I was excited the entire way from the university to the camera place, which is quite a distance, only to find out when I arrived that they were having equipment issues and it will not be done until Tuesday, as a result of the long weekend. Thus, my day ended on an anticlimactic note, but I am counting my blessings. Once Costco completely ruined my film and then tried to blame my camera, despite the fact that the roll before and the roll after were perfectly fine. So I will be patient. At least this time, my film is in safer hands.

Dragon in Knots News:

I finally purchased the yarn to make accompanying sets to the Orange Slice Coasters! The Lemon Slice Coasters are already listed, and the Lime Slice Coasters are in progress. I have also begun a ladies' winter wear collection, named after ski areas in New Mexico. Many thanks to Sushi Girl for the naming suggestion! Here are the items already listed: Enchanted Forest Fingerless Gloves, Sipapu Fingerless Gloves, Angel Fire Fingerless Gloves, Red River Fingerless Gloves, Angel Fire Scarflette, and Red River Scarflette. More scarflettes and hats are on their way!

I have also listed a new set of notecards entitled Become like a Child, which feature the verse Matthew 18:3 - ‘And He said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”’ All the proceeds from these cards will go towards helping Mustard Seed Babies Home in Hoima, Uganda. Mustard Seed takes in children who are orphaned or abandoned or whose families cannot take care of them. It provides a safe, loving home and healthy food for these children, as well as funding their schooling.

The Day of Doom is Coming...

And by that I mean school is about to start up again. That is not to say I do not enjoy or value learning, but school really does cut into my crafting and reading time. In a week I begin my fourth year at UNM. It looks like it will be a busy one, but I am fairly certain I will be able to graduate at the end of it. I am not quite sure what I will do next, though I would like to continue studying in at least some sense. I took the idealistic route and chose majors without regards to a future career, so now I am on a quest to figure out what to do with myself.

As for Dragon in Knots news, I found my old collection of quotes from high school and started writing down some new ones, so I have commenced making promotional bookmarks using various hand-picked amusing, inspiring, and elegant quotes. I figure their usefulness will make them more appealing than standard business cards. Also, the choice of quotes will give people a tiny insight into my personality, which might peak enough interest so they will come a check out the shop. Or at the very least, I will have the satisfaction of having provided
an object of utility to them. The first batch has just been sent out to KunkleBaby to be given out at her next craft show.

Since my previous origami mobiles were mostly pastel, I finally made one that is a little more eye-catching: the Polka Dot Chain of Cranes. I think it is adorable, but it is not for the faint of heart...

My last bit of news for today is that I started experimenting with ACEOs. My first two, Puppy Love (pen and colored pencil) and France for the First Time (pen), are pictured here. I will have to ponder what to do with them.

Presenting my newest item: Orange Slice Coasters (no doubt inspired in part by all those Oranginas I drank while in France)! These summery coasters are hand-crocheted and hand-stitched in the shape of orange slices. This is a set of 6, but let me know if you are interested in a different quantity!

As you may have noticed, Dragon in Knots is taking the summer a little slower this year than last year. I am using this summer to look at my educational options and to decide where to go from here. As a result, there will not be as many new items this summer, but I have renewed many of the old items. Winter items will be renewed in late summer and fall. Hello Again!

I returned from my trip a few days ago, so Dragon in Knots is now up and running again, though I am still getting used to the change in time zone. I have quite a few expired items that I am gradually renewing.

For those of you who asked, the trip was interesting and fun, though very tiring. It was my first time outside of the country, so it was an important experience for me. Below is a list of some of the places I visited:

Just a brief reiteration of some important information I said earlier: Dragon in Knots will be closed from May 11th to 30th because I will be in France as part of a class. I will probably not have internet access during this time, so I will answer e-mails and convos received during that time when I return. If you have any urgent questions, please contact me before Friday. Please see my last blog post for more information. I am planning on whipping up some cute items this summer, so be sure to take a look at my shop when I return!

For the curious, I will be mostly in the Paris and Provence areas. If you are nearby, I will be the one wearing fabulous though perhaps out-of-the-usual clothing with hand-crocheted flowers stitched onto my backpack. I cannot wait to get out of the desert a bit and see the beaches and architecture and just everything! And I hope I can find some creme brulee over there! I will miss my fellow Etsians and everyone here in New Mexico (my little hamster included, of course), but I will be back soon enough to tell anyone who listens all about it. I will be doing some traveling in May, so Dragon in Knots will be out of its normal operations for a while. Here is a summary of what to expect. I will post more information here later.

Right now, as you may have noticed, some items have expired. Unless I receive requests to renew specific items, I will not be renewing these items until I return from my trip, so that I have less to deactivate before I leave and to avoid building up momentum right before a trip. Most items will be renewed in June. In order to direct my shop more towards the other types of crafts, much of the jewelry will not be renewed, unless requested, though I will renew some of the more interesting pieces.

From May 1st to May 11th, I will not be accepting custom orders and will only be accepting Paypal as a method of payment, in order to avoid leaving any transactions uncompleted while I am away and also because these are the last couple weeks of the semester, which tend to be too hectic for custom orders, regardless. My apologies for any inconveniences!

From May 12th to May 29th, I will be in France as part of the requirements for my degree. Dragon in Knots will be closed while I am away, and I may not have internet access during this time, so please be patient if you try to contact me while I am gone. If there is an item in my shop that you would like me to reserve for you, so that you can purchase it without the risk of someone else buying it first, please send me an email, and I can mark it as reserved when I reactivate it upon my return.

As you may already know, USPS is, unfortunately, raising their rates in May. I will be gradually adjusting the shipping rates on Dragon in Knots accordingly. However, I am researching different sources of packaging materials, etc. in order to try to reduce the cost from these materials, so that I can minimalize the effect of the shipping increases.

In June, after the expired items are renewed, I will be listing some new items, so check back at Dragon in Knots during the summer months!

The Splats are Back!

Due to the popularity of my egg splat items (not to mention the fact that I love crocheted eggs), I have started making some new ones. This time I am using a bright blue for the background rather than black to give the items a cheery, Spring-like appearance. I am hoping to try out some other colors once I finish up the blue yarn.

Right now, I have a Splat Wrist Cuff and a Children's Splat Hat listed. I just finished making a Baby Splat Hat, which will be listed soon. Check back at Dragon in Knots later for more splat items!

Fair Katrinelje

I had so much fun making handflowers that I decided to start making barefoot sandals as well! The Fair Katrinelje Barefoot Sandals are made with glittery brown yarn. They are also available in lilac or black, upon request!

Here are a couple informal definitions for those of you who are unfamiliar with these terms:

A handflower is basically a bracelet that also connects to the middle finger. A barefoot sandal is an anklet that also connects to the second toe to give the appearance of wearing sandals, even though you are barefoot. Both are usually made with beads, chains, and other “normal” jewelry materials. However, I designed cute crocheted versions, which have some stretch for greater comfort.

I also made some more handflowers since I last posted. The Fair Katrinelje Handflower is crocheted with a sparkly brown yarn, and the Foundling Bird Handflower is crocheted with a lilac yarn. You may have noticed that these are slightly different sizes. Send me a note if you want a certain size in a different color than listed!

Princess in Disguise

I just made my first handflower, inspired by Eclipse's forum thread about handflowers. The Princess in Disguise Handflower is the tenth item in my Fairy Tale series. This somewhat gothic handflower, also called a slave bracelet, was crocheted from a sparkly black yarn in a fishnet pattern. Check back in my shop later for more handflowers!

On other Dragon in Knots news, I renewed the Dryad Poncho and changed some of the pictures. I also added another wrist cuff. The Seven Ravens Wrist Cuff was crocheted from the same black yarn as the Princess in Disguise Handflower. It features a flower design and is laced with burgundy ribbon.

Considerations for Tags on Etsy

Choosing tags is one of the more difficult tasks when listing an item on Etsy, mainly because many of us, including myself, are not entirely sure what and what not to include as a tag. Thus, with the help of various Etsians (see the end of this post), I compiled this guide to help you out with choosing tags. Keep in mind, these are just suggestions from other sellers and are therefore neither official nor mandatory.

General Suggestions – On Etsy, you have 14 available tags for each item. Use as many as you can. The search function is largely based on tags, so these will help people find your items. That said, use the tags appropriately. You want the people who are looking for an item like yours to be able to find it. Misused tags simply direct people to items they do not want and therefore will not purchase.

Because of the way Etsy is set up, you may want to use some of the words that are in your title or materials in your tags as well. For example, if I were to look for a wool sweater, I would probably just put “wool sweater” in the default “tags and titles” search. Thus, if “wool” is in your materials but not your tags or title, I would not find it. Also, tags are used to place your item in subcategories, so keywords in your titles may also make good tags.

Considerations – These may not all be important for your particular item, and you may want to consider other types of tags, but I hope these will at least give you some ideas.

In what category does it belong? – Your first tag is the main category. Choose the category that best fits your item. Remember that non-handmade items are only allowed in “Vintage” and “Supplies.” If your item is a commercial supply, choose “commercial” for your second tag.

After you have selected your category, the site will give you a list of related tags. Click on the appropriate tags to add them to your listing. However, do not limit yourself to the suggested tags. Add others that describe your item.

What is it? – This may seem basic, but categories are somewhat broad, so be sure to add a tag saying what exactly your item is. Also, consider whether or not there is another name for your item. For example, a hooded sweater is both a “sweater” and a “hoodie.”

What color is it? – Add tag(s) for the main color(s) in your item. If it is multicolored, add the tag “multicolor.” You may also want to consider the overall color scheme of your item. Possible tags: blue, red, yellow, pastel, bright, dark, black, white, neon

What style is it? – Style is one of the most forgotten considerations when making tags. To whom would your item appeal? Possible tags: victorian, gothic, classic, traditional, feminine, masculine, modern, retro, dainty, bold, asian, african, renaissance

What design(s) does it have? – Consider the overall shape of the item, if important. Do any distinct patterns appear on the item? Possible tags: striped, spiral, polka dotted, geometric, floral, plaid, checkered

Do any images appear on the item? – For artwork, what is the subject of your piece? Also consider describing the image. For example, if your item has a French flag on it, try adding the tags “flag” and “french.” Possible tags: flower, butterfly, rabbit, portrait, man, woman, kite, star, hearts, boat

What is the overall theme of your piece? – This may have some overlap with style and subject, but in case there are any important tags you missed, consider what emotions and ideas are in your item. Possible tags: love, death, peace, patriotic, sympathy, astronomy, chemistry, history

Towards what occasion(s) is your item geared? – This may or may not be applicable for your item. Is your item holiday-specific? Is it for a special occasion? For what season or situation was it made? Possible tags: holiday, christmas, valentines, wedding, graduation, birthday, all-occasion, formal, casual, mothers day, thanksgiving, winter, spring, summer, fall, autumn, indoor, outdoor

For whom is your item? – This may not be applicable for certain items, but it is very important for others, especially clothing and items that have phrases like “World’s Best Grandpa” on them. Possible tags: unisex, men, women, adult, children, baby, toddler, girl, boy, dog, cat, hamster, newborn, teen

What size is your item? – This is another tag that is very important for clothing but is also useful for other items, like that 32 oz. mug you just made. Consider overall size and if appropriate, length, width, etc. Possible tags: extra small, small, medium, large, extra large, plus size, maternity, long, short, wide, narrow, thick, thin, bulky

What is the texture and surface of your item like? – Again, this is a consideration that may not be important for certain items. For photographs and prints, you may want to describe the sheen of the picture. Possible tags: fluffy, soft, fuzzy, glossy, matte, textured, sparkly, unfinished, finished, painted, varnished, stretchy

What techniques were used in creating your item? – Consider how your item was made and if they are any special methods for which people might search. For artwork, is it an original or a print? Possible tags: crochet, knit, felted, chainmaille, embroidery, quilted, origami, kirigami, print, original, screen printed, amigurumi, braided

What features does your item have? – Think about what else might be important to people searching for items. For example, for a pair of gloves, are they fingered, half-fingered, fingerless, or convertible? Possible tags: long-sleeved, fingered, half-fingered, fingerless, drawstring, earflaps, laced, pocket, convertible, short-sleeved, spaghetti strap, sleeveless, hooded, food safe

What materials were used to make your item? – You probably do not need to put all the materials you used in your tags since they should already be in your materials section. However, as said above, if I were to look for a wool sweater, I would probably just put “wool sweater” in the default “tags and titles” search. Thus, if “wool” is in your materials but not your tags or title, I would not find it. Thus, you may want to consider what materials for which people may search using the “tags” search function. Possible tags: silver, gold, copper, wooden, wool, polymer clay, glass, pearl, acrylic

What else? – If you still have not used all 14 tags, try considering the following questions:
Is your item custom made or made-to-order?
Is it one-of-a-kind?
Is it made from recycled materials?
Will a portion of the proceeds go to charity?
Is the item on sale?

Acronyms – Here are some acronyms that may be used as tags. Some are general art and craft acronyms. Others were created by Etsians.

Recently, I renamed the sections in my Etsy shop in an attempt to make them a little more interesting. I came up with most of them fairly quickly, but I am stuck on the name for my jewelry section. Thus, I am having a contest! The winner will receive a $10 gift certificate to my shop!

I signed up for a spot in the Showcase of Boys' Gifts for tomorrow! Since the site runs on Eastern time, there is only four and a half hours left before my shop is featured, so be sure to pay a visit! On other Dragon news, I have been fixing some of the photos in my listings to make them more appealing and/or more accurate, especially with the colors. For example, the pictures for the Lime Baby Blanket are now actually lime green as they should be! After a revelation that I might not be the only person who dreads water rings on my desk, I started making a few desk coasters. Desk coasters are basically individually sold coasters, so you do not have to steal coasters from the living room to have a cup of coffee at your desk! I also listed my first sweater for sale. The Aimee Sweater is a cozy, fluffy red sweater that would be perfect for Valentine's Day or any day when you are feeling a bit chilly. I have some other cool projects in the making. I ran out of some yarn that will have to be mail ordered, so I am afraid it will be awhile before they are available.

Once Upon a Time...

As the snow begins to melt, I am starting a line of clothing, inspired by fairy tales, which will continue into spring. I have improved my pattern and will be introducing more crochet corsets in the future. Well, we are now in the after-Christmas down time, so I am taking this opportunity to make a few long-awaited changes for the new year. Firstly, I have created a system to keep track of coupon codes. As for crafting, I have been taking a little break for the holidays but should be back listing items on Etsy in no time. I still have a lot of "winter" yarn to use up, but I am also working on some spring and summer items. I found some beautiful ribbon yarn in a small shop in a small town during my Christmas adventures, and I am making something quite lovely with it. It may take awhile, so check back in my shop in a few weeks!
